GHOST ARMY
In 1944 the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, or the Ghost Army, was created as a top-secret unit meant to deceive the German Military. With just over 1,000 men the troops were able to mislead the Germans regarding location and size of the American troops through deception, art and ingenuity. They relied on weapons such as inflatable tanks, jeeps and planes and sound effects, false radio transmissions and improv playacting.
They staged 20 battlefield deceptions impersonating other American battalions in order to deflect the Germans attention from the movement of the actual battalion. The soldiers were comprised of artists, set designers, sound technicians and other specialists (including Bill Blass, Elsworth Kelly and Art Kane). The military recruited heavily from art schools on the east coast as well as Hollywood. The unit was classified top secret until 1996.
SILHOUETTE
The Fall 2008 Collection is inspired by the ingenuity of the Ghost Army and explores ideas of illusion, faux details and camouflage. The silhouette combines refined, elongated tailored lines with exaggerated proportions, interspersed with elements of organic experimentation.
FABRICS
Fabrics focus on a rich range of textures and contrasts (chunky and superfine, hairy and smooth, shiny and matte). Hairy and boiled materials play a central role in the collection. The material is used in various forms in both knitwear and wovens. In addition, these are supported by superfine cashmere, lightweight silks, taffeta w/ chenille details, stiff iridescent coating, quilted nylon, lightweight papery leather and chintz suiting.
COLORS
The color story is created in three parts, including a range of blues (navy, dutch blue and a sapphire blue) mixed with charcoal and accented by yellow, pale grey and army green. The second story works with camels, warm neutrals and rusty browns accented by cayenne red, pumpkin orange and a light coral. The final section is comprised of jewel tones in deep blue, dark crimson, and deep purple.
